A lot of people think a portrait is about a face. Yes, a lot of portraits need the face to express their message. AR Dictionary online defines Portrait as The likeness of a person, painted, drawn, or engraved; commonly, a representation of the human face painted from real life, or any graphic or vivid delineation or description of a person; as, a portrait in words. The orthodox definition of a portrait definitely involves the human face. But. A portrait could be a visual metaphor, a description of a concept or idea. A portrait, for instance, of grace.
You can make a portrait of anything. It could be a portrait of loneliness. Or a portrait of circumstance and serendipity. What's your portrait? I bet if you brainstorm something you could express with ordinary things such as a dress or an umbrella, or a wall.
