Rembrandt often used side lighting, along with Vermeer and a host of other masters. Side light is when light is coming from one side of the subject. Here, we have a window to the right of the frame. Side lighting allows dynamic use of light, where there is a three-dimensional effect because one side of the face has light that is brighter than the other side of the face.
Window light, that most common of our daily experience, can be beautiful when used on a portrait.
